Alicia Nails, director of the Journalism Institute for Media Diversity, has been appointed to the Arts, Culture and Communications Committee of the Michigan Black Leadership Advisory Council.

Recent MAS grad, Gus Navarro, living his dream at ESPN Films

“I’m living my dream job right now,” said Navarro, who was promoted last year to associate producer at ESPN Films. “I’m getting to do things that my younger self, 10 to 20 years ago, couldn’t probably believe. I think about that a lot and it’s a great perspective to keep in mind. I’m at ESPN, living in New York City. It’s amazing.”

Juanita Anderson Juanita Anderson  

Juanita Anderson’s short film "Sydney G. James: How We See Us" had its nationwide broadcast premiere on March 24 as part of the PBS American Masters series "In the Making" episode, which featured opera singer J'Nai Bridges and country music artist Rissi Palmer. The broadcast launched the second season of the Firelight Media/American Masters short film series In "The Making," hosted by Audra McDonald.

Michael Fuhlhage and his co-author, Lee Wilkins, received a book contract offer. Also, his panel on the topic of their book, news media apologies for complicity in systemic racism, has been selected in a competitive process to be on the program at AEJMC in Washington D.C. this summer.

Rosie Jahng received a 2023 Senior and Emerging Scholar grant. The grant was awarded to support her Senior Scholar project: “Exploring Twitter Bots Message Strategies to Encourage Social Media Upstanders against Anti-Asian Disinformation.”

Rahul Mitra has been chosen as a recipient of a 2023-2024 Career Development Chair Award.

Elizabeth Stoycheff Elizabeth Stoycheff  

In January, Elizabeth Stoycheff was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Caplan Foundation to create an online privacy intervention program for families. The intervention will use an animated video series to increase awareness of US privacy law, common threats to digital privacy, dataveillance practices of large technology firms, and recommendations for secure internet use. The intervention is intended to increase privacy knowledge and efficacy for family members who serve as digital caretakers for children or other dependents. She also received the Outstanding Mentor Award.

Student Updates

Najma Akhther Najma Akhther  

Najma Akhther has received $5,000 through the Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health 2023 Research Stimulus Award. Her project will examine the effectiveness of social media-delivered mental health recovery narrative messages in anti-stigma communication, specifically targeting minority populations.   

Md Khadimul Islam  

Khadimul Islam’s extended abstract, "Communicating Type 2 Diabetes: Social Determinants of Health Cues in Print News Media," was accepted for presentation at AEJMC Midwinter conference 2023. In addition, a manuscript he co-authored, "Determinants of Bangladeshi patients' decision-making process and satisfaction towards medical tourism in India," was accepted for publication in Frontiers in Public Health journal.  Two of his student’s papers have been accepted at the AEJMC Midwinter conference 2023. Last semester, Khadimul taught a Research Method in Communication course, in which students were assigned to write a paper. He encouraged, guided and offered them extra credit to submit their extended abstracts at AEJMC Midwinter 2023 conference.
