Highlighted events | | 2023 WSU Juneteenth opening celebration Join us as we kick off our weeklong Juneteenth celebration! This year's opening celebration — to be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 12, at the Bernath Auditorium inside the David Adamany Undergraduate Library — promises to be memorable as we commemorate the day that marks the end of slavery in the United States. Be a part of the festivities as we celebrate the rich culture and history of the African American community. Let's come together to honor the past and celebrate the present. | | On Juneteenth: Black struggle, Black freedom and Black restitution On June 13 at 3:30 p.m., in the David Adamany Undergraduate Library's Bernath Auditorium, Wayne State will present its annual Juneteenth Keynote Address, which will be presented by Ronald Williams II, Ph.D. The title of Williams' address is "On Juneteenth: Black Struggle, Black Freedom and Black Restitution." This keynote also will be livestreamed on wayne.edu/live. | | | | Juneteenth: Freedoms, Education and Resilience On June 15 at 5 p.m., the Wayne State Organization of Black Alumni presents a Juneteenth panel discussion that examines American freedoms in school systems and beyond. Wayne State educators will reflect on the historical significance of Juneteenth and the educational importance in American classrooms. Panelist also will share their plans to help educate their communities in recognition, celebration and service of Juneteenth. | | 2023 WSU Juneteenth closing celebration Join us at the David Adamany Undergraduate Library on June 20 at 2 p.m. for the closing ceremony of Juneteenth, where we will lower the Juneteenth flag and conclude the weeklong celebration. The festivities will feature music, dancing and a picnic sponsored by the Organization of Black Alumni. The day will conclude with an evening screening of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in Keast Commons.
