Join us for a Fireside Coffee Chat with Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Teena Chopra, Assistant Dean of Coaching and Professional Development. During this 40-minute coffee chat, you will learn about lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and how faculty can be more engaged in pandemic preparedness.

Anthony Fauci

Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. is an American physician-scientist and a Distinguished University Professor in the Georgetown University School of Medicine’s Department of Medicine.  He also holds an additional appointment in the university’s McCourt School of Public Policy. Previously, Dr. Fauci served as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, from 1984 to 2022. Dr. Fauci was a key advisor to seven Presidents on global HIV/AIDS issues, and on preparedness against emerging infectious disease threats.  He also served as the Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden. Dr. Fauci was one of the principal architects of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which has helped save more than 25 million lives throughout the developing world.

Dr. Fauci is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and many other professional societies.  He has received numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, and the Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service.  He has been awarded 61 honorary doctoral degrees from universities in the United States and throughout the world and is the author, coauthor, or editor of more than 1,400 scientific publications.

Teena Chopra

Teena Chopra M.D., M.P.H. is the Assistant Dean of Faculty development and coaching, and a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, at Wayne State University. She is also the Corporate Medical Director of Hospital Epidemiology, Infection Prevention and Antibiotic Stewardship at Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University. Her research interests include Epidemiology of Health care associated Infections, Infection Prevention Antibiotic Stewardship and Immunization.

Dr. Chopra has published over 90 papers in various journals and book chapters. Additionally, she has independently reviewed over 60 journal articles. Dr. Chopra has a special interest in immunization and studying the epidemiology of infections, including Clostridium difficile and Multi-Drug Resistant Organisms. Dr Chopra has championed the mammoth task of leading the COVID-19 pandemic for Wayne State University and DMC. She is serving on the president’s COVID task force and on the President’s Public health committee. She has appeared on countless media and print interviews including CNN, FOX, NPR and TIME magazine. She is fellow of Executive Leadership Academy of Medicine (ELAM) 2022-23. She has extensive experience in coaching and mentoring trainees and faculty.

The Wayne State University School of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs & Professional Development welcomes all members of our community to join us for an upcoming interactive discussion:

"The Influence of Disability Bias in Healthcare on Patients, Trainees, and the Workforce  "

In this one (1) hour interactive panel presentation participants will learn about the effects of implicit bias on: 1) healthcare and health outcomes for people living with disabilities, 2) training experiences of students and other learners living with disabilities, and 3) hiring and practice opportunities in healthcare for people living with disabilities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how explicit and implicit biases related to disability impact admission and training experiences of students and other learners with disabilities
  • Describe how explicit and implicit biases related to disability impact hiring and practice opportunities and conditions for people with disabilities
  • Describe how explicit and implicit biases related to disability impact healthcare experiences and health outcomes for people with disabilities
  • Assess strategies currently utilized to provide inclusive education or care to individuals with disabilities and their limitations
  • Recommend novel/new/additional strategies to mitigate the impact of implicit bias with regard to disability

Panelist's:

Julie CregoJulie Crego is the Human Resource Director for Wayne State University’s School of Medicine, College of Nursing and Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Prior to joining Wayne State, Julie was a member of a leadership team that opened a successful Sub-Acute Rehab facility in Troy, MI. For 10-years, Julie was the Human Resource Director for the facility, also providing leadership support in other buildings in her region. Julie brings a wealth of HR expertise from over 25-years in Human Resource Consultation and Management. Valuing continuing education, Julie is presently enrolled in Wayne Law’s Masters of Studies in Law program. 

 

 

Anne MessmanAnne Messman, M.D. attended medical school at George Washington University in Washington, DC and completed a residency in emergency medicine at St John in Detroit. She joined the faculty at the WSUSOM in 2013, working initially as an associate program director at Sinai-Grace Hospital. She currently works clinically in the emergency departments at Sinai-Grace and Detroit Receiving Hospitals. She serves as the Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education for the WSUSOM. 

 

 

 

Sokol Todi

Sokol V. Todi, Ph.D. is Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology and Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology. Until January 2022, Dr. Todi served as the Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Affairs for the university. Dr. Todi opened the doors of his laboratory at Wayne State in December 2010, was awarded Tenure in 2015, and was promoted to full Professor in 2020.

 

 

 

Angela TrepanierAngela Trepanier, MS, LCGC is a professor (Clinician Educator) in the WSU Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics and Director of the Wayne State Genetic Counseling Graduate Program. Angela has worked with development disabilities advocates for over a decade to educate students and providers about how to have non-biased, balanced conversations when delivering a diagnosis of a condition associated with developmental and other disabilities.

 

 

 

Dan WalzDaniel A. Walz, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, joined the Department of Physiology in 1973. Before his appointment as Associate Dean he served 10 years in the University’s Office of the Vice President for Research. He is also Deputy Director for the Environmental Health Sciences Center. He has been the Principal Investigator on numerous federal and national agency research and training grants. His area of research is in hemostasis with an emphasis on platelets.
