"The Influence of Disability Bias in Healthcare on Patients, Trainees, and the Workforce "
**This session meets the state mandate for implicit bias training and includes one hour of training.**
In this one (1) hour interactive panel presentation participants will learn about the effects of implicit bias on: 1) healthcare and health outcomes for people living with disabilities, 2) training experiences of students and other learners living with disabilities, and 3) hiring and practice opportunities in healthcare for people living with disabilities.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe how explicit and implicit biases related to disability impact admission and training experiences of students and other learners with disabilities
- Describe how explicit and implicit biases related to disability impact hiring and practice opportunities and conditions for people with disabilities
- Describe how explicit and implicit biases related to disability impact healthcare experiences and health outcomes for people with disabilities
- Assess strategies currently utilized to provide inclusive education or care to individuals with disabilities and their limitations
- Recommend novel/new/additional strategies to mitigate the impact of implicit bias with regard to disability

Panelist's:
Julie Crego is the Human Resource Director for Wayne State University’s School of Medicine, College of Nursing and Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Prior to joining Wayne State, Julie was a member of a leadership team that opened a successful Sub-Acute Rehab facility in Troy, MI. For 10-years, Julie was the Human Resource Director for the facility, also providing leadership support in other buildings in her region. Julie brings a wealth of HR expertise from over 25-years in Human Resource Consultation and Management. Valuing continuing education, Julie is presently enrolled in Wayne Law’s Masters of Studies in Law program.
Anne Messman, M.D. attended medical school at George Washington University in Washington, DC and completed a residency in emergency medicine at St John in Detroit. She joined the faculty at the WSUSOM in 2013, working initially as an associate program director at Sinai-Grace Hospital. She currently works clinically in the emergency departments at Sinai-Grace and Detroit Receiving Hospitals. She serves as the Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education for the WSUSOM.
Kristen Swan serves as a Disability Specialist at Student Disability Services. She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology and art history from Williams College (MA) and her Master of Arts in Social Work from the University of Chicago. Kristen has worked at SDS since 2016, transitioning from Testing Assistant to a Disability Specialist. In her role, she supports students in the general student body by providing accommodations and equal access.
Sokol V. Todi, Ph.D. is Professor in the Departments of Pharmacology and Neurology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology. Until January 2022, Dr. Todi served as the Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Affairs for the university. Dr. Todi opened the doors of his laboratory at Wayne State in December 2010, was awarded Tenure in 2015, and was promoted to full Professor in 2020.
Angela Trepanier, MS, LCGC is a professor (Clinician Educator) in the WSU Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics and Director of the Wayne State Genetic Counseling Graduate Program. Angela has worked with development disabilities advocates for over a decade to educate students and providers about how to have non-biased, balanced conversations when delivering a diagnosis of a condition associated with developmental and other disabilities.
Daniel A. Walz, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, joined the Department of Physiology in 1973. Before his appointment as Associate Dean he served 10 years in the University’s Office of the Vice President for Research. He is also Deputy Director for the Environmental Health Sciences Center. He has been the Principal Investigator on numerous federal and national agency research and training grants. His area of research is in hemostasis with an emphasis on platelets.
