Dean of Students Office - Wayne State University

Dear fellow Warrior,

I hope you had a restful and productive fall break. As we return for the second half of the semester, I would like to share important information regarding campus policies, including a new Spirit Rock policy that requires a reservation by a Registered Student Organization to paint the Spirit Rock.

It is acknowledged that we are a diverse and inclusive campus that includes people from many different backgrounds with varied beliefs. We value and respect each and every student and expect that every student is respectful of their fellow students and their views, including in communication formats they choose to use, like the Spirit Rock, chalking and the posting of flyers.

Students and registered student organizations have access to many creative outlets to advertise their organizations, events and missions. Below you will find updated policies regarding some of these avenues. Students, student organizations and the members within who fail to follow these policies are subject to the Student Code of Conduct. If you have any questions, please email the Dean of Students Office at doso@wayne.edu.

David Strauss, Ph.D.
Dean of Students

Spirit Rock

The “Spirit Rock” is located across from the Undergraduate Library near the Linsell House, on Gullen Mall. This new policy is effective Oct. 17, 2023.

Reservations

  • Reservations can be made at any time by a Registered Student Organization (RSO) via the EMS WebApp.
  • The reservation begins at 9:01 p.m. the day before the reservation in EMS and continues until 9 p.m. the day of the reservation (example: ABC organization reserved the rock for Oct. 13, they can start painting the rock at 9:01 p.m. on Oct. 12).
  • RSOs will be permitted to book one day at a time. Multiple days in a row will not be permitted.

Chalking

The use of chalk to create signs is permitted only on sidewalks. Permanent markers, paint or spray chalk are prohibited. Chalking may not be done under entrance canopies or under overpasses where rain cannot naturally wash away the chalk. Chalking is also not allowed on any vertical surfaces found on buildings, columns, outside or inside walls or windows, trees, retaining walls or steps. The exception being the tunnel under Towers Residential Suites, where painted with black chalk paint.

Flyers, posters and other physical advertisements

Certain buildings on campus have specific areas for the display of leaflets and posters or other publicity material. Posts can be made on any open bulletin board on campus that does not have a reserved sign on it.

Posting material on a university door, window, inside wall or any building exterior surface, will be in violation of this policy and the reported violators may be subject to disciplinary action through the proper university channels. Furthermore, any student organization or student found defacing university property will be subject to charges and sanctions under the Student Code of Conduct. Likewise, individual persons found despoiling the campus may be subject to disciplinary/legal action.

Amplified sound

Amplified music, of any kind, will not be allowed to be played on Gullen Mall during class hours (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 9:20 p.m. times subject to change by semester) because of interference with the academic mission of the University including classroom teaching, library usage, and studying. All amplified music programs must be located on Keast Commons.
