Welcome to Spring

Wow, doesn't it feel like March simply flew by? Before we know it, it'll be time to pack those sweaters and boots away in favor of sandals and umbrellas, and the ice scraper can come out of the back seat and move to the trunk. Maybe don't leave it in the garage just yet; this is Michigan, after all. Take a moment to sit back with your beverage of choice and check out what we've got coming up for you in April and early May, and have a great week!

The WSU GEARS Bystander Leadership Workshop is an all-day skills-building workshop for WSU faculty and chairs, held in the Student Center Ballroom A-B from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3. It is an opportunity to learn active bystander intervention techniques that interrupt instances of bullying, bias, and microaggressions. These behavioral interventions are designed to reduce racial and gender bias and improve inclusion on campus.

The all-day event is led by faculty members from the Departments of Theatre, Physics, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Chemistry. Faculty members from across the university are invited to sign up to participate in the dynamic workshop, which includes skits, breakout groups, and simulated conflict scenarios. 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11 | Core Curriculum Webinar: Mastering Academic Time Management

This webinar provides skills for a successful transition from graduate student to professor, addressing issues like long work hours with little progress, feeling unsupported for work-family balance, and limited mentoring. Participants will learn the common time management mistakes of new faculty, the alignment of work time with institutional and personal priorities, how to create time for academic writing and research, and how to organize a network for writing productivity and balance.

2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 | NCFDD Panel Discussion: What I Wished I Would Have Known: Transitioning to Department Chair

Becoming a department chair presents many exciting opportunities, from creating institutional change to supporting students and colleagues. However, this transition can be challenging as department chairs take on new responsibilities, expand their skill sets, manage budgets, and navigate organizational policies and politics. In this session, a panel of current and prior department chairs will share their insight, identify relevant resources, and offer advice.
