On Feb. 7 at 1 p.m. at Manoogian Hall, Wayne State Professor Todd Burroughs will discuss the life and work of two giants in African American media, journalism, and politics. Mumia Abu-Jamal and Oprah Winfrey were born in the same year and developed a strong interest in communication. However, their careers and politics took them in different directions. Professor Burroughs will explore the important similarities and differences between these two American icons.

Mario Grillo on the Machito influence, Afro-Latin jazz, and dance music  

Musician Mario Grillo, son of the legendary Afro-Cuban band leader Machito, will discuss in his life in music on Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m. in the Bernath Auditorium at the Undergraduate Library.  Mario Grillo shares his story of working with his father and becoming a popular musician and band leader in his own right.  Grillo will also reflect on the contemporary state of Afro-Latin music.

On Feb. 29 at 5:30 p.m., Professor Gladys Mitchell-Walthour examines the lives and struggles of poor Black women in Brazil and the United States. She examines how these women navigate a system that oppresses them and provides benefits. The event will be held in the Bernath Auditorium at the Undergraduate Library.
