Stitching Stories: A Journey through Black Quilting Artistry Stitching Stories: A Journey through Black Quilting Artistry  

Celebrate the rich tapestry of African American culture throughout February in a new display in the David Adamany Undergraduate Library atrium. The exhibit focuses on the vibrant world of quilting by Black women, a craft that goes beyond textile to weave tales of creativity, resilience and cultural significance.

Mario Grillo on the Machito influence, Afro Latin jazz and dance music  

Musician Mario Grillo, son of the legendary Afro-Cuban band leader Machito, will discuss in his life in music Feb. 21 at 12:30 p.m. in the Bernath Auditorium at the Undergraduate Library. Grillo will share his story of working with his father and becoming a popular musician and band leader in his own right. Grillo will also reflect on the contemporary state of Afro Latin music.

Black Business Reunion: Uniting the Community for Prosperity Black Business Reunion: Uniting the Community for Prosperity  

Black-owned businesses have held down the city for decades. In honor of Black History Month, TechTown will recognize the legacy and emerging Black-owned businesses at the root of Detroit's growth as we host a celebration Thursday, Feb. 22, at 9 a.m. at the Wayne State Industry Innovation Center.

A To Sangana cultural experience  

Join us Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. at the Hilberry Gateway to enjoy African finger food, pastries, beverages and more. The studio will offer dance presentations and the opportunity to sample African, ballet, contemporary and Afrobeat classes, along with spoken word and a drum jam session.

Politics of survival: Black women social welfare beneficiaries in Brazil and the United States Politics of survival: Black women social welfare beneficiaries in Brazil and the United States  

On Feb. 29 at 5:30 p.m., Associate Professor Gladys Mitchell-Walthour examines the lives and struggles of poor Black women in Brazil and the United States. She examines how these women navigate a system that oppresses them and provides benefits. The event will be held in the Bernath Auditorium at the Undergraduate Library.
