Dear Wayne State University community, In a recent communication, we shared the importance of fostering an inclusive learning environment that celebrates and protects open dialogue and free speech. That message also referenced an upcoming event designed to engage our entire community in the balance between free and respectful discourse on campus. The symposium, “Speech on Campus: Perspectives, Implications and Ethics,” will take place Thursday, Feb. 29, in the Student Center Ballroom. This daylong, interdisciplinary event will feature two panel discussions regarding the varying educational academic freedom and institutional interests implicated by controversial speech and how to balance these interests to promote free and civil discourse on our campus. We are honored to welcome to our campus University of California, Berkeley School of Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky and Seattle University President Eduardo M. Peñalver, renowned legal scholars and national leaders on issues of campus speech, who will provide a lunchtime keynote. We encourage all members of our campus community to take part in this important conversation. More information, including a schedule and lineup of panelists and presenters, is available on the event website.
This symposium represents an important step toward understanding and collaboration within our university community. It is through rigorous debate and the free exchange of ideas that we can truly understand one another and work together toward solutions that benefit us all. We look forward to seeing you there. Sincerely, Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy
