Wayne State University

Dear Students,

With the end of the term approaching, half of the class has already sat for the USMLE STEP 1 and many more will be taking it in the next two weeks. We are confident that a vast majority of the class will pass and move on to prepare for clerkships. However, we also anticipate that some student students will not be able to start clerkships in April.

We are committed to ensuring that these students succeed in passing the STEP 1 and are able to start clerkships next year. To that end, we have designed an additional period of intense support from the School of Medicine. As a result, the school’s Curriculum Management Committee recently voted to require any student not sitting for STEP 1 on or by the deadline (March 2, 2024) or not posting a passing score by March 31, 2024, to be enrolled in the newly created Advanced Learning Strategy course between April 1 and June 30, 2024. This in-person course will provide students the opportunity to attain mastery of the foundational curricular content necessary to pass the STEP 1, along with enhancing study skills and offering the support of the school’s wellness resources.

A virtual town hall will be offered on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. (see Zoom link here) to provide an overview of the course and to answer your questions. In the meantime, please see the attached advising guide.

Until we meet later this week, please feel free to submit your questions anonymously using this link here. We will make sure that all questions are addressed during Wednesday’s meeting.

Sincerely,
Dr. Richard S. Baker
Senior Vice Dean of Medical Education
