Campus Health Center - Wayne State University

May is Mental Health Month

This year’s theme for Mental Health Month is “Where to Start: Mental Health in a Changing World.” If you are a WSU student, the Campus Health Center is a great place start. Physical health and mental health are equally important components of overall health, so we encourage you to share your mental health concerns with our team. If needed, our provider will refer you to our mental health triage service, our social worker or our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. It’s OK to ask for help.

Mental health triage

Navigating mental health options can feel overwhelming, so let us help. Our free, confidential mental health triage service can provide you with resources, on or off campus, that best align with your needs and preferences. To start the process, please complete the Mental Health Triage Form. Our clinician will follow up and guide you through the next steps. Common reasons students use mental health triage include:

  • Feeling stressed, overwhelmed or anxious
  • Relationship issues
  • Feeling lonely or isolated
  • Difficulty adjusting to college

Mental health triage is for WSU students with non-emergency mental health needs.

Let's Talk

Currently registered WSU students can schedule a free 15-minute Zoom meeting with a CAPS counselor, who will provide psychoeducation, resources and referrals. The scheduling link is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Note: The Campus Health Center’s "Let’s Talk" session is every Tuesday, from 2 to 3 p.m.

Step 2: Use the Zoom link that corresponds with your appointment time.

Questions? Email CAPS at caps@wayne.edu.

Managing stress

Mental Health Month is the perfect time to identify coping tools that reduce your stress. Some ideas include:

  1. Do something nice for someone.
  2. Make a list of potential solutions to problems.
  3. Play with a cat or dog.
  4. Watch a movie that you loved when you were younger.
  5. Tear paper into tiny pieces.
  6. Have a good cry.
  7. Write in a journal or draw your feelings.
  8. Do a puzzle or play a game.
  9. Go for a walk on campus or take a group fitness class at the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center.
  10. Unplug from your devices for a period.

Understanding the stress-reducing tactics that work for you will help you handle whatever comes your way.
