Enrollment Management - School of Medicine - Wayne State University

Good afternoon Class of 2027!

NBME has opened the registration system for you to register for your Step 1 examination. You can visit our website for assistance with starting the process. Please follow steps carefully.

Helpful notes when completing the Certification of Identity form:

  • Carefully review and only check one box (preferably the upper one)
  • Checking both boxes will result in a delay
  • Checking the lower box will require you to complete this form again for Step 2
  • You must hand sign it. No electronic signatures, no cursive font.
  • Send the document as a PDF to records@med.wayne.edu. We'll add your class picture and submit it to NBME.

Your window is January 2025 to March 2025, but you must sit for the examination by March 1, 2025.

We have reviewed the availability of Prometrics Test Centers for the Step 1 examination. For our test window, availability has not yet been released at close centers (like Troy and Ann Arbor) and the closest centers that are showing up are Toledo, Fort Wayne and Erie, PA. This is an issue every year, and availability is released at our closer centers in October and November. Here's what you can do:

  1. Once you have registered and submitted your certification of identity form to our office, it will take about 2 weeks to get a permit sent to you by NBME to allow you to pick a date on Prometrics' site. You don't have to pick a location/date immediately, so you can select your date as availability opens closer to Detroit.
  2. Pick a farther away location when the permit arrives, just for peace of mind, but change it to something closer later. There is no charge for location/date changes if it is 46 days before the test date.

Students are responsible for paying for the Step 1 examination. This is built into your cost of attendance if you are a federal financial aid recipient, but it is not an additional line item in your refund. (i.e. you're not getting a separate $680 check from Financial Aid.) You'll still be able to pick a prime date if you wait until the October disbursement to register and pay for your exam.

Our recommendation, to meet the requirements of Step 1 policy, is to complete registration by December 6, 2024. This will allow our office to complete your certification of identity AND for NBME to issue a permit in time for you to have selected a specific date by January 10, 2025.

If you are applying for accommodations, please do not wait until the last minute to register. The NBME can take up to 60 business days to review your documentation, so it's in your best interest to register ASAP.
