From the President's Desk - Wayne State University

Dear Wayne State community,

I am thrilled to share that Wayne State University has for the first time been ranked among the Top 100 public universities in the nation, according to the 2025 U.S. News & World Report Best College rankings. This year, we proudly stand at No. 97 among public universities, an improvement of 12 spots over last year.

This remarkable progress reflects the dedication of our entire campus community to advancing our mission of providing a world-class education in the heart of Detroit. Our ranking was significantly boosted by outstanding performance in social mobility, where we rose an incredible 89 spots to No. 62 nationally. This achievement highlights Wayne State’s deep commitment to fostering upward mobility for our students, ensuring that they not only receive an excellent education but also have the holistic support needed to succeed in their careers and lives.

Wayne State’s overall national university ranking also jumped significantly, moving up to No. 179 from No. 201 in 2024. This places the university in the top 12% of the 1,500 universities and colleges evaluated by U.S. News & World Report. It’s the university’s best overall ranking in 20 years.

Wayne State’s focus on student outcomes, combined with the continued strength of our faculty and research contributions, has driven our upward momentum in the rankings. We are creating an accessible and innovative learning environment that directly benefits nearly 24,000 students, offering them the opportunity to thrive in a dynamic, supportive academic community.

With one of the largest incoming undergraduate classes in our history, increasing enrollment and growing national recognition, it’s clear that Wayne State is on an exciting trajectory. We are energized by this momentum and committed to building on it as part of our broader Prosperity Agenda.

This recognition affirms what we already know: Wayne State is one of America’s leading public universities, and we are making an even greater impact on the lives of our students, the city of Detroit and beyond.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this achievement. Let’s continue to reach new heights together!

Sincerely,

Kimberly Andrews Espy
