From the President's Desk - Wayne State University

Dear Wayne State University community,

This time last year, we announced the College to Career (C2C) initiative to integrate and scale our approach to student success, enhance our impact in the community, and ensure our students graduate career ready and prepared to thrive – all toward accelerating the mobility of our students, a pillar of WSU’s Prosperity Agenda.

In our role as a premier urban-serving research university, many faculty already have designed experiences that provide pathways to postgraduate success. Through the College to Career initiative, we aim to grow this important work with additional resources to reach even more students. Over the last year, funding was provided to support a handful of existing projects and programs to nurture “learning by doing” experiences on campus.

We are thrilled that the value and impact of this work continues to resonate on campus and with our community partners. Last week, Huntington Bank underscored their commitment of $750,000 in support of our College to Career initiative as we continue to expand our work. With this support, we are pleased to announce a two-step process to provide new support for College to Career projects.

First, we are pleased to share that in order to provide a rapid jump start to scale existing work, 15 projects have been selected to receive funding to support or expand existing or emerging efforts via the first Presidential C2C Pilot Award. These projects, selected from a pool of impressive and diverse work nominated by the deans and representing each of our schools and colleges, have already demonstrated success and direct ties to our mission. Coupled with the existing projects, this initial C2C pilot investment will allow the university to further expand existing projects and scale innovative ideas to serve more students. These efforts will enable us to strengthen our relationships with community partners and employers, serving Detroiters and connecting students with leaders and mentors from a variety of employers – ranging from community-based nonprofits to industry.

Secondly, early in the winter semester, we will announce a campuswide open call process for new Presidential C2C Pilot awards that will provide opportunities to support new faculty-designed and led College to Career initiative projects to foster innovation and collaboration.

With these important new investments, we can expand and build upon our work to serve more students, inspire ideas across campus and continue the exciting momentum around our College to Career initiative. Together, along with the dedicated faculty and staff who move this work forward, we will continue to nurture and grow ongoing campus efforts to provide students with the world-class education and experience they need to thrive here and beyond in their limitless future.

We thank you for your continued support of the College to Career initiative and remain excited about the opportunities ahead.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Andrews Espy
