Tips to lessen Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that typically occurs during the fall and winter months, when daylight hours are shorter. For students, SAD can add stress to an already challenging academic time. Symptoms include low energy, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep and loss of interest in activities.

Following are things you can do to lessen the impact of SAD:
  • Use a light box that mimics sunlight to help regulate mood and sleep cycles.
  • Spend time outside during daylight hours, even on an overcast day.
  • Exercise to releases endorphins, which can improve your mood.
  • Talk to someone — such as a counselor, friend or family member —about what you are experiencing.
  • Use our mental health triage service to be connected to on- or off-campus resources.
If you think you might be experiencing SAD, reach out for support, as early intervention can make a big difference in managing symptoms throughout the winter months.

Mental Health Triage service

With final exams on the horizon, the holidays quickly approaching and the recent presidential election, you may be feeling somewhat anxious. If you’re struggling to manage your feelings, you may want to seek support. Our free, confidential mental health triage service will provide you with resources, on or off campus, that align with your needs. To start the process, please complete the mental health triage form. Our clinician will follow up and guide you through the next steps.

Common reasons students use mental health triage include:
  • Feeling stressed, overwhelmed or anxious
  • Facing relationship issues
  • Feeling lonely, isolated
  • Difficulty adjusting to college
Mental Health Triage is for students with non-emergency mental health needs.

We have the COVID vaccine

The holidays are just around the corner and so are the festive gatherings with family and friends. Protect yourself this holiday season by getting your COVID-19 vaccine. While you’re here, you can also get your flu or RSV vaccine if needed. Schedule an appointment online or call 313-577-5041.
