In the Loop - School of Medicine - Wayne State University

Welcome to the In the Loop newsletter, an initiative of the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Office of Assessment, Accreditation and Continuous Quality Improvement.

As a champion of continuous quality improvement, your School of Medicine has benefited greatly from the feedback of students and other stakeholders. This feedback has been instrumental in driving positive change.

In the Loop aims to keep you informed about these important updates and changes, and the successes we’ve achieved together.

This month, we shine the spotlight on the success of two key initiatives: the PEARLS Professionalism Reward Program and the Pledge of Ethics and Professionalism.

PEARLS Program: Celebrating professionalism in medicine

Since October 2020, the School of Medicine has celebrated the PEARLS Program, an initiative dedicated to uplifting and recognizing the professionalism of our medical students. The program values of Professionalism, Empathy, Accountability, Respect, Leadership and Stewardship reflect the very essence of what it means to be an exceptional physician.

The program spotlights students who go above and beyond, whether in the classroom, clinic or community, in exemplifying these principles. By focusing on positivity and recognition, the PEARLS Program inspires future doctors to embrace their calling with compassion, competence and commitment.

Recognition tiers: Honoring excellence

A student nominated for exhibiting the PEARLS values in the classroom, clinic or community can be recognized at one of three tiers:

Bronze: Receive an electronic certificate acknowledging professionalism.

Silver: Be awarded a PEARLS lapel pin and a special School of Medicine gift item.

Gold: Notation made in the student’s Medical Student Performance Evaluation letter and receipt of a School of Medicine certificate.

Examples of past nominations

  • A clerkship student who demonstrated exceptional care during rotations.
  • A student who displayed integrity by reporting concerning behavior.
  • A student who volunteered outside business hours to support COVID-19 vaccination efforts.

Nominate a student who inspires you

The PEARLS Program invites faculty, staff, residents and clinical site representatives to nominate outstanding students who exemplify these values. While self-nomination isn’t permitted, students are encouraged to recommend themselves or peers to eligible nominators.

To nominate a student, complete the PEARLS Submission Form.

Pledge of Ethics and Professionalism

Adopted in 2022, the Pledge of Ethics and Professionalism was developed by a School of Medicine committee of faculty. The pledge, which all WSU medical students make during the Clinicians Ceremony at the beginning of the third year, is accompanied by the 16 Cs, the core values that comprise the essence of a Warrior M.D.

The full pledge and the 16 Cs can be found on the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education and Curricular Affair website.

For more information on professionalism standards for WSU medical students, review the School of Medicine’s Professionalism Policy.
