New Reporting Window for All ACGME Resident and Faculty Surveys

The pandemic has delayed the opening of the ACGME’s annual Resident and Faculty Surveys for the 2020-21 academic year. There will be one reporting window for all programs to participate in both the Resident and Faculty surveys. That window will open February 1, 2021 and close April 1, 2021. This change will give programs more flexibility in completing the surveys, moving from a 5- to an 8-week reporting period. GME will be monitoring completion to ensure that all our programs achieve at least 70% compliance for residents and faculty (our goal is to have 100% compliance for both surveys in all programs). Program Coordinators should ensure that core faculty lists are accurate in ACGME ADS, since they will be the ones required to complete the survey. While making this accommodation for Resident and Faculty Survey participation, ACGME reminds all programs that this year’s surveys are mandatory and must be completed by April 1, 2021. It should be noted that all questions on the 2020-21 Resident and Faculty surveys are the same as those on the 2019-20 surveys. The 6th  Annual Michigan Summit on Quality Improvement & Patient Safety will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, from 8 am to 12:30 pm via Zoom. The Summit comprises two parts: (1) a voiceover PowerPoint competition and (2) a livestream competition. Program faculty and fellows are also welcome to present their projects. Presenters will be selected by the GME office via a competitive process. Participants will present in either Voiceover PowerPoint Presentation (VOPP) via YouTube or Livestream Slide Presentation (LSSP) via Zoom. Spring 2021 Academic Boot Camps (ABCs)

GME will be holding all ABCs as Zoom webinars in 2021. The next will be held on Friday, April 16 from 3-6 pm. The seminars are conducted by Dr. Brent Stansfield, GME Director of Education. Both DART (for residents) and DEFT (for faculty) projects can lead to sustainable improvements to our programs' curricula and may also result in conference presentations or publishable manuscripts. 2020-21 Seed Grant applications

WSUGME is now accepting Seed Grant applications for 2020-21. There are separate applications for Research projects and QI projects. Prospective applicants are welcome to send application drafts in advance of the deadline for preliminary review and feedback by GME staff. The last meeting of the Resident Council was held on February 9 from 6:30-7:30 pm. Topics included plans for the second annual Professional Development Symposium, now to be held as a virtual event on the evening of April 13, on the theme of Leadership in Medicine. GME residents, faculty, and staff participated in the WSUSOM's 2nd Annual Medical Education Research and Innovation (MERI) Conference, held on December 8, 2020, as a virtual event. The MERI conference provides students, residents, faculty, and staff with a showcase for their current curricular innovations, a platform for receiving input about possible program implementation, and a venue for moving research into publishable form. The keynote speakers included Holly Gooding, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Emory University School of Medicine and co-director of the Harvard Macy Program for Educators in the Health Professions, who spoke on "The science of learning and its application to health professions education," and Anna Cianciolo, Associate Professor of Medical Education at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, on "The editorial process from soup to nuts." Anesthesiology residents and faculty publish article

Anesthesiology residents Jon Lucaj, Peter Paik, Nazia Siddiqui, and Program Director Sandeep Krishnan have published an article titled "Echocardiography to diagnose an evolving Sinus of Valsalva fistula from infective endocarditis," to appear in the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia. Well done!  

Publications by Internal Medicine resident Mishita Goel, residents, and faculty

IM resident Mishita Goel, program alumnus Shubhkarman Dhillon, Program Director Sarwan Kumar, and Associate Program Director Vesna Tegeltija are co-authors of an article "Clinical judgement in chest pain: A case of Near miss multivessel coronary artery disease" to be published in the Journal of Medical Case Reports. Dr. Goel was also a co-author of an article titled "Impact of arrhythmias on hospitalizations in patients with cardiac amyloidosis," an NIS database study published in the American Journal of Cardiology. Most recently, she collaborated with current resident Victoria Gonzalez, program alumna Reina Badran, and faculty Vesna Tegeltija on "Clinical course of COVID-19 in identical twins," which appeared in the Journal of Medical Case Reports. The latter publication was featured in a New York Times story published in January 2021 titled "Twins with Covid help scientists untangle the disease's genetic roots" by Katherine J. Wu (for more details, see this issue's Resident Spotlight). Way to go!        

Dermatology resident and faculty publication

Dermatology Associate Program Director Geoffrey Potts is co-author of an article "Pleomorphic fibroma: A clinicopathologic case series and review of the literature," published in the American Journal of Dermapathology, with Taylor Adlam, a current Dermatology resident; Sarah Stierman, a Dermatology program alumna; Meena Moossavi, Dermatology faculty and Chief of Dermatology at the VA; and Darius Mehregan, the Hermann Pinkus Chair of Dermatology in WSUSOM. Congratulations!      

Mehdi Farshchian, Dermatology resident, publishes articles

Dermatology resident Mehdi Farshchian is co-author of an article on "Management of primary focal hyperhidrosis: An algorithmic approach," accepted for publication in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology. It was written in collaboration with Vivian Liu, a SOM student, and Dermatology Associate Program Director Geoffrey Potts. Dr. Farshchian also co-authored an article with Sonal Muzumdar and Jane M. Grant-Kels in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology titled "Dear Dr. Dermatoethicist: Ethics of social media marketing by dermatologists." In addition, Dr. Farshchian published a case report in Dermatologic Therapy on "Desquamative skin rash associated with temozolomide in a patient with glioblastoma," co-authored with Redina Bardhi, a SOM student, and Steven Daveluy, the Dermatology Program Director. Way to go!        

Family Medicine faculty gives community presentation on vaccines

On Thursday, January 28, Family Medicine faculty member Eleanor King gave a presentation entitled “A Brief History of Vaccines” under the auspices of Smart Towns, a lifelong learning community program led by educational organizations in Rochester, Rochester Hills, and Oakland Township. In addition to an historical overview, Dr. King discussed how vaccines have become a vital yet also controversial feature of contemporary society. Hats off!  

ACGME has developed a suite of on-demand well-being resources called AWARE, designed to promote well-being among residents and faculty. AWARE primarily focuses on individual strategies for cognitive skill-building and includes a video workshop, podcasts, and the ACGME AWARE app. Programs, institutions, and individuals can download these resources for integration into existing curricula or use in tandem with other efforts to mitigate the effects of stress and burnout and foster well-being among members of the GME community.
