GME's Health Disparities Task Force WSUSOM residents and faculty are deeply committed to reducing health disparities and improving patients' lives. With a longstanding focus on innovation in education, research, and clinical care, our residency programs train a diverse group of physicians who strive to provide equal healthcare for all. Implementation of effective strategies for addressing health disparities (HD) has been a concern in medical education for more than 20 years. However, in 2020 the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on minority populations has made the challenge of achieving health equity more critical than ever. To meet this challenge, in the summer of 2020 GME established a HD Task Force to assist our programs with incorporating HD training as a permanent component of their curricula beginning in 2021. This initiative is in accord with the mission of Wayne State University, the School of Medicine, as well as mandates from ACGME and the State of Michigan. In August 2020, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued Executive Directive 2020-7 calling for “all health care professionals to receive training on implicit bias and the way it affects delivery of health care services . . . The Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) . . . will establish implicit bias training standards as part of the knowledge and skills necessary for licensure, registration, and renewal of licenses and registrations of health professionals in Michigan.” | | GME News and Announcements | New Reporting Window for All ACGME Resident and Faculty Surveys The pandemic has delayed the opening of the ACGME’s annual Resident and Faculty Surveys for the 2020-21 academic year. There will be one reporting window for all programs to participate in both the Resident and Faculty surveys. That window will open February 1, 2021 and close April 1, 2021. This change will give programs more flexibility in completing the surveys, moving from a 5- to an 8-week reporting period. GME will be monitoring completion to ensure that all our programs achieve at least 70% compliance for residents and faculty (our goal is to have 100% compliance for both surveys in all programs). Program Coordinators should ensure that core faculty lists are accurate in ACGME ADS, since they will be the ones required to complete the survey. While making this accommodation for Resident and Faculty Survey participation, ACGME reminds all programs that this year’s surveys are mandatory and must be completed by April 1, 2021. It should be noted that all questions on the 2020-21 Resident and Faculty surveys are the same as those on the 2019-20 surveys. Any questions or concerns should be directed to Martha Jordan at mjorda@med.wayne.edu. | | SEMCME: QIPS Summit and Research Forum [virtual] dates announced The 6th Annual Michigan Summit on Quality Improvement & Patient Safety will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, from 8 am to 12:30 pm via Zoom.
