Fall 2021 Academic Boot Camp (DART/DEFT): Tuesday, Oct. 19

The first Academic Boot Camp of 2021 will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 19. The seminars are conducted by GME Director of Education Dr. Brent Stansfield. Both DART (for residents) and DEFT (for faculty) projects can lead to sustainable improvements to our programs' curricula and may also result in a conference presentation or publishable manuscript. Attendees might pursue projects that address the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on their area of training. GME is pleased to announce the establishment of the Svider Award, in honor of the scholarly achievements, clinical excellence, and exceptional collegiality of Dr. Peter Svider.  He completed a residency in the Dept. of Otolaryngology in 2018 and subsequently held a rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery fellowship at Rutgers University. Dr. Svider wrote more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and 8 book chapters. He died in 2021 at the age of 34. Starting in 2021-22, the Svider Award will be given once annually to a graduating resident or fellow in any GME program in recognition of distinctive achievement in scholarly activities across the entire period of training. This award provides GME and program leadership with an opportunity to publicly acknowledge and commend a resident who has achieved a high level of scholarly productivity that reflects the ideals of graduate medical training.  

GME is pleased to announce that it will be participating in the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Center's (AIAMC) National Initiative VIII on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI), together with Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital. The AIAMC National Initiatives are national, multi-institutional collaborations in which residents lead multidisciplinary teams in QI projects designed to drive change that can result in meaningful and sustainable outcomes improving the quality and safety of patient care. The office-and-hospital teams were selected on the basis of demonstrated commitment to better understanding and improving justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in their clinical learning environments. Participants will attend four learning sessions as well as monthly networking teleconferences and educational webinars. WSUGME is now accepting Seed Grant applications for the upcoming year. There are separate applications for Research projects and QI projects. GME's recent scholarship

GME's article entitled "An OSCE case for opioid management: Standardized patient ratings of communication skills as a predictor of SBP scores" has been published in the Journal of Patient-Centered Research & Reviews. It was co-authored by staff members Heidi Kenaga and Brent Stansfield with former GME Dean and DIO Tsveti Markova, IM Program Director Sarwan Kumar,  and former FM Program Director Pierre Morris. In addition, Dr. Stansfield recently presented a poster on "Wellness vulnerabilities of resident medical interns: COVID impacts self-care and perceived institutional support," research arising from a collaboration with the Charleston Area Medical Center. Co-authored by Dr. Kenaga and Dr. Markova, the poster was presented by Dr. Stansfield at the Coalition for Physician Well-Being Annual Conference held July 28-30.

The first Resident Council meeting for 2021-22 was held on July 13 from 6:30-7:30 pm as a virtual event. There was good attendance from all programs. President Danny Taheri (IM) addressed the upcoming year's agenda, including the focus of the 2022 Professional Development Symposium, mostly likely diversity and inclusion. The second meeting was held on August 10; among other topics, attendees discussed individual programs' social media presence, resident compensation, the Marvin program (a free mental health resource specifically for residents), community outreach and engagement, and a possible social event in the fall sponsored by the RC. All RC meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30-7:30 pm. Contact Dr. Taheri if you would like to get involved!

Derm faculty, residents have articles accepted

Dermatology Associate Program Director Geoffrey Potts, resident Mehdi Farshchian, and WSUSOM medical student Jenna Yousif are co-authors of a manuscript on "Oral nail growth supplements: A comprehensive review" accepted for publication in the International Journal of Dermatology.  Dr. Potts and Dr. Farshchian have had another manuscript on "Transient hypertriglyceridemia associated with propranolol for treatment of infantile hemangioma" accepted by the Australian Journal of Dermatology. Well done!

Derm faculty present at MSMS Spring Scientific Meeting

At the MSMS Spring Scientific Meeting held on June 17, Dermatology APD Geoffrey Potts, Dept. Chair Darius Mehregan, and Program Director Steve Daveluy participated in an Updates in Dermatology 2021 session, giving talks on "Hyperhidrosis management for the primary care physician," "Skin biopsy: Getting your money's worth," and "Serious medications for serious skin disease: What you need to know," respectively. Congrats!

GME is happy to introduce Marvin, a new mental health resource developed specifically for medical residents. Marvin works with residents' insurance so there is no cost. The WSU Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provided by Ulliance is available to all residents, faculty, and staff at no cost. It's confidential and available to you, your partner, and your dependents. Warriors Strong Together is a program offered by the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences that provides free assistance for all members of the WSU community who may be experiencing difficulties coping with the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic. As an added convenience, the services are available by telephone or videoconferencing per the caller’s preference.

ACGME has developed a suite of on-demand well-being resources called AWARE, designed to promote well-being among residents and faculty. AWARE primarily focuses on individual strategies for cognitive skill-building and includes a video workshop, podcasts, and the ACGME AWARE app. Programs, institutions, and individuals can download these resources for integration into existing curricula or use in tandem with other efforts to mitigate the effects of stress and burnout and foster well-being among members of the GME community.

Internal Medicine holds 2021 graduation ceremony, awards

The Internal Medicine program held its 2021 Graduation Celebration at the Cherry Creek Golf Course in Shelby Township on the evening of Wednesday, June 16. Thirteen residents are moving on to positions as hospitalists or beginning fellowships in specialties such as geriatrics, cardiology, pulmonary critical care, and nephrology. Ankita Aggarwal, Laith Al-Janabi, Victoria Gonzalez, Gloria Hong, and Manishkumar Patel received Chief Resident certificates. Vatsal Khanna and George-Joseph Nahal were chosen as Interns of the Year, Kristen Hughes was selected as Resident of the Year, and Manishkumar Patel won the Professionalism Award. Mohammad Fityan was designated Teacher of the Year (Core Faculty) and Sunitha Santhakumar Teacher of the Year (Community Faculty). Photos here. Congratulations to all, and good luck! 

Dermatology started the new residency year with wellness and team-building events. On June 30, residents and faculty went to Top Golf in Auburn Hills and on July 1, the residents participated in an activity at Breakout Escape Rooms in Royal Oak. Photos here.  

In July, Family Medicine residents and faculty had some outdoor fun at a Rochester park, celebrating 2021 graduates Ashley Aragona, Tarek Chahine, Peter Ly, Ben Maynard, and Brad Woelke.
