Office of Faculty Affairs and Development - Wayne State University

The semester is in full swing

Autumn leaves on the trees in Campus Martius Park with a clear blue sky above

That was fast! Just last month, we welcomed you back to campus, and now it's time to think about midterm grades (due by October 16). Now is a great time to take the temperature of your course with a Mid-Semester Assessment Program (MAP) from the Office for Teaching and Learning.

We've also officially transitioned to Fall; hopefully, the seasonal changes are a source of joy rather than anxiety. As we prepare for sweater weather, we still want to hear from you about your preferences regarding using social media professionally or for academic purposes. Please take a few moments to share your thoughts, then check out our upcoming professional development opportunities and deadlines below.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act review

The start of a new semester is a good time to take a few moments to review FERPA guidelines: FERPA, or the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. It grants students the right to inspect and review their records, request amendments for inaccuracies, provide consent for disclosures, and file complaints regarding non-compliance.

FERPA violations can impact the university's ability to dispense federal financial aid; all faculty and employees of Wayne State have a legal responsibility to protect student education records. This includes keeping student information secure and only sharing it for legitimate reasons. To play it safe, don't discuss information on your students with anyone besides the student without express permission from the registrar. More information about FERPA can be found at the office of the University General Counsel, the Office of the Registrar, and the U.S. Department of Education.
